托勒密《占星四書》

簡介

托勒密的《占星四書》，可以說是對這個世界影響最大的著作之一。這不僅是就其天文學又或是占星學成就而論，也是就其流傳的程度而論。

希臘占星學，在西元600年後，在歐洲幾乎難以存活，托勒密的文本隨著諸多希臘化時代的著作一起東傳，譯為阿拉伯文，其後受托勒密《四書》影響的諸多占星文本，又再東傳入中國，成為《明譯天文書》；在另一方面，《四書》又在文藝復興時期，譯回拉丁語，重新影響歐陸的占星傳統。在近代，托勒密文本的古希臘語原本，也順利在不同殘存的手稿中，得以比對重建。不論是在科學史、文化史、思想史或是占星學的研究上，《占星四書》都從未離開人類智識活動的舞台。其影響力之廣，可見一斑。

雖然托勒密在占星學上的影響力，一直不間斷的持續到了20世紀，也早在70年代，便有依照古希臘原本的英譯本，然而驚人的是，迄今市面上竟沒有完整的中文翻譯本。就網路搜尋可及的部分，《四書》也僅有其第一冊內容，較常受到討論。

而《明譯天文書》雖有諸多內容來自托勒密的學說，然仍有許多細節卻沒有保存下來。因此，我雖並不總是同意托勒密的占星見解，也覺得這《占星四書》的翻譯工作，還是有其必要性。

文本來源

《占星四書》的現代英譯本，共有兩個來源：一是由古希臘研究學者 Frank Egleston Robbins (1884–1963) 於1940年出版的譯本，其全文可以網上閱讀，這也是目前流傳最廣的譯本。另外尚有占星師 Robert Schmidt (1950–2018) 於其 Project Hindsight所譯，譯文紙本雖不販售，但該網仍在販售其譯文的閱覽權，目前每月的訂閱費用為9美金¹。這兩個版本的英譯本，內容大致是相同的。翻譯的風格上，Schmidt 較常採用字面翻譯，Robbins 增加較多他個人的詮釋在內。我認為兩個版本各有優缺，都很值得一觀。不過 Schmidt 並沒有完成第二冊的翻譯。

此外，若讀者有古希臘文的底蘊，也可參考占星四書希臘文版。

我翻譯的主要來源是 Robbins 版本的譯文，我也對照 Schmidt 的譯文和註腳，在非常感到困惑的時候，我會去查找古希臘原文，當我對文章另有見解時候，也會加入我自己的註腳。Schmidt 的譯文仍有版權，因此他的譯文我不會公開，也不會對他的譯作的任何內容放上逐字句的翻譯。
